多くのボクシングファンは、コットがラストファイトに勝利することを期待して観ていただろう。
コットのような実績十分のベテランファイターは自身の偉大なキャリアを背負って戦っているようなところがあり、ファンは過去の印象に残るファイトをフラッシュバックさせながら、ついつい現在と過去の姿を重ねて観てしまうものだ。
ところがラウンドが進むにつれて違和感がむくむくと。
「こんなにスピードなかったっけ？」
「こんなに勘が悪かったっけ？」
「えっ、なんでカウンター取られまくっているの？」
勝負所で手数をまとめられず、
逆に守勢に回って、ディフェンスで手一杯。
「もう少し楽な相手を選ぶべきだったね」
ラストラウンドのゴングを待つまでもなくそんな感想を持ってしまう。
そう、アリは今のコットにはちょい厳しい相手だった。
フットワーカーでディフェンスのいいカウンターパンチャーは誰にとっても嫌なものだが。
ワンサイドではなかったけどペースはずっと取られていた。
アリもコットをよく研究していた。
コットに前に出て来させてカウンターを取る戦術がはまっていた。特に前半。
パンチもきれていたしね。
コットがロープ際に下がって誘ってきても乗らず。
クレバーに戦ったと思う。
ビッグネームを食ってせっかく名前を上げたのだから、今後はファンにアピールするファイトを期待する。
強いのが犇めくクラスなのだからただ勝つだけではね。
毎回こんな戦術重視のファイトばかりだと人気者にはなれない。
